Hip Hop Double Page Spread Analysis
This double page spread within the Hip Hop magazine catches your eye instantly with the use of the colour upon the page, due to it not looking like any other double page. The colours they have used for the background of the article are thought to match the title of the double page spread “GIRL ON FIRE”. Although fire is sin as an rebellious and destructive thing the colours used to represent it cant help but create and warm and welcoming affect to the audience. It also manages to make the article look like a fun and enjoying read as it involves a variety of colours where as other may not. This theme they have gone for manages to strong matches and link with the front cover and contents page, even though this double page spread has a lot more order and high quality finish to it compared to the front cover and contents which then creates a variety of opinions on the magazine, this then leads to the read left confused with what they are reading and whether or not what they are reading it reliable (need a trust formed within it).
The image used for this article of Alicia Keys makes her come across as if she is looking into her past due to her looking to the left instead of the right which could represent her looking into the future. The look away for the camera could also imply she is shy towards the audience as she is revealing something she hasn't before, this is then backed up and confirmed with the “EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW” written above the the title for the double page spread. To make the title stand out from the image and the article the text has been made white, which also catches the audience eye to be informed the play on words used due to the artist (Alicia Keys). Compared to other double page spreads this title for the spread has been placed upon the image side of the double page spread (the left). This gives there more of an order to the article side of the page and shows that the article text is connected to the picture. The article begins without a drop capital, which is highly uncommon as it usually used to catch the readers eye but this was unnecessary for the article as the colouring used for the text (dark pink, light pink, yellow and white) contrasts well against the background colouring (deep purple). The colours used for th etext has then been keyed on the page. The dark pink is for the magazine name (HHW), the light pink has been used for the artist name (Alicia Keys), yellow has been used to highlight what the magazine have asked and the white has been used to show what Alicia's answer was. This is a simple yet effective and professionally looking way to bring an article across to a reader. The images used upon the article side of the page have both been bordered with the same colouring and style on the whole double page spread to keep up the high quality finish. The picture have also been sided the same and have a relationship with what have been imaged. The text has been split into three evenly sized columns that have then been shaped around images if necessary. The use of paragraph and breaks allows the audience to take breaks and to not get confused with the columns set to the page. Even though here is a lot going on upon the page with the colouring, images and style it is easy on the eye and still comes across as mature due to the order created but is also portrayed as fun and interesting because of the colouring contrasts.
